Thank you very much again for the links, though. I've immediately hit errors beginning to try again today, despite the very helpful links googled and seen lenovo has particular difficulties. I'd tried that a while back, and I think with my pc being a Lenovo erazer x310, lenovo has some odd issues. Thank you also for confirming it isn't safe to do a full test run. I'd been using Abiword for a while, just for simplicity, before realising it is in Linux setups too. Yes, there are some great other softwares. ![]() ![]() Would very much like to use Linux usb for anything other than art one issue I'm seeing is that it can be difficult to make a drive where settings can be saved? Am shifting to physical notes/diary to safeguard privacy, too. Wonderful to hear about extended support until 2023, and inbuilt drivers. Thank you for such helpful clear replies, for being so welcoming, and that it's okay to ask. Thank you very much jimallyn, tomgin5 and michael louwe. Like people say, "If it ain't broken, don't fix it", esp for non-techies like yourself. Device drivers for Windows will not work for Linux because the coding is different. The Semper Driver Backup is meant for reinstalling your Win 8.1, and not for installing Linux Mint. I think Linux Mint does not support Touchscreen(eg tablets), wrt photo-editing programs like MS Paint with pressure sensitivity. Īre you using an OEM Win 8.1 tablet which has limited hard-drive/disk storage.? If so, you should not install Linux unless you are 100% certain that there will be no problems. Win 8.1 can still be safely/securely used online for groceries/banking/bills, but it is more secure/safer/better to use a Live Linux USB-key or DVD to do online financial transactions. Win 8.1 will be in extended support(= receive important and security updates only, ie no new feature updates) until 2023 = you do not need to buy extended support for your Win 8.1. Almost certainly somebody here will know how to get the driver you need. If the driver you need doesn't come with the install, and it's not in the Driver Manager, it's probably best to ask on the forums. Most of the experts will say to NOT go looking for drivers on the web, it's easy to come up with the wrong thing. I should add, in general, it is best to use the drivers that Mint provides in the kernel or in Driver Manager. ![]() There is also a tutorial here on the forums here:Īnd if you have any questions, don't be afraid to ask, the forums are here to help! (I know I did!) There are instructions on how to set up dual boot with Windows and Linux here: You don't have to wipe out your Windows to use Linux, you can dual boot, that is, when you boot up you will be given the option to boot either into Windows or into Linux. If something works "Live", either it will work when installed, or it can be made to work after the install. In Linux, most drivers are built in to the kernel. Mint won't use the drivers from your Windows install. I have to do things very slowly and simply it's fine to talk to me as if I'm baby level at tech, even though it's illness the issue, as I would genuinely not be offended at all, and would be very grateful indeed for help. Unsure which other drivers Mint might need too, but I searched and Semper came up, which was easy to use have a folder of various drivers/dll's it found. I don't know if it is safe to install Mint fully on my hard drive in order to do a proper test about the tablet driver, as I don't know if I would be able to use the usb Windows 8.1 restore key, if I find things don't work. I found out that mspaint runs with pressure sensitivity if I mirror the monitors, but it must be reading the tablet driver from Windows. Struggle with anything beyond basic at this time, but, before learning of the issues about updates/chips/mainstream support ending, I'd really loved Mint Cinnamon's 64-bit live-try boot, and it would be great to be able to run it. I would be more than grateful to have another choice, and one that is stable for art and basic use. I can't find links to buy Win8.1 extended support, and don't want to do that, with disagreeing so much with Microsoft's behaviour, it would be an absolutely last resort, if I couldn't follow the no doubt very helpful instructions here. Worried how I could even run Windows 8.1 beyond January safely, except turning the internet off except when eg ordering groceries. ![]() Ill health and rely on pc for groceries/banking/bills, and for art. Lack of privacy/choice is being forced both in software and hardware. I'm also seeing that new pc chips won't support Windows 8.1 any more, and 2 chips won't receive windows updates earlier than January. I've just discovered that Windows 8.1 mainstream support is ending next January. Hello and thank you for the opportunity to post.
